The 1,250 km² property—host to 12 historic mines that produced 60 Mt of copper and zinc between 1963 and 2022—now offers two upsides: short-term critical-minerals feed for Glencore’s Valleyfield plant (on which Glencore will retain a 2 % NSR) and significant untapped gold potential in the same greenstone belt as Detour Lake. Existing road and rail infrastructure, a 3,000 t/d concentrator and the return of veteran geologist Gilles Roy position Matagami for a rapid restart and an aggressive exploration campaign.
